Ooookay, the response on this one has been pretty unanimous and I guess I owe you bakers dozen out there an explanation. This scenario stuck in my mind because it pretty much actually happened, though to a much lesser degree. For whatever reason, people I hardly know want to smack me on the hands. In this particular instance though, I'd already injured my hands, so the usually harmless smack re-opened the existing cuts and caused the hapless clerk to believe she'd done more damage than she actually had. Bwa ha ha ha. It was funnier in my mind.
